Coming to the map veto you picked Mirage, let ENCE pick Nuke and Dust2 was the decider. Your nuke record wasn’t that good up until this match. You only won 2 out of 7 maps recently but one of those victories was against ENCE. Was this in the back your mind when you saw they picking nuke?
AZR: „Leading into this game we knew they going to pick either nuke or train and we had a really weak map against FaZe the other day on nuke so we definitely knew they going to pick it. Like you said before we had a good record against them on nuke in the past so this was obviously in the back of our minds, we had to play our own game leading into this and made a gameplan and we stuck on it and felt pretty confident.“
The last map was Dust2, which you haven’t played on in a while and when you played it recently you lost the map. Was this a hit or miss pick or a curveball you were throwing on ENCE in case it would go the full distance.
AZR: „I mean we are very confident in our dust2. We’ve played a lot of games recently on Dust2 although we lost them and those games being pretty close like our first game against NRG at this event we lost 16-14 and we knew we lost that game because of our mistakes, we’ve been practicing Dust2 a lot. We know we are good on it we just have to make sure the execute the next one.“
In the group stage you were facing elimination being 0-2 one of those losses was against AVANGAR your potentially next opponent. Would you rather go for Vitality the arguably second best team in the world right now or would you prefer a revenge match against AVANGAR.
AZR: „I think revenge would be sweet right? Heading up against AVANGAR they obviously beat us 16-13 in the best of one, so getting revenge on them in a seminfinal would be awesome. I love to take it back from them and showing who’s boss.“
The upper half seems to be the weaker one according to all the experts because the lower half seems to be pretty stacked with NRG, NaVi, Astralis and Team Liquid. Espcially NRG seems to be in a really good form right now. But still the major seems to be open for all. Everyone has a decent chance to win it. How do you feel about it?
AZR: „I think I have to agree with you that the other bracket being a lot harder. But I think a lot has changed since the player break. A lot of teams including ourselves we’re able to reinvigorate and change stuff in the game. So these other teams, I think everyone can play each other. Like you said it’s very open, anyone can take it. It really comes on whose on point on the day.“
Liquid mentioned the player break took his toll but for you it doesn’t seem like it, of course you had your struggle in the group stage. What happened between the group stage and the playoffs? How did you mentally reset and fix your mistakes?
AZR: „Obviously we ended on 3-2, so our confidence was quite high coming into the playoffs as I would say because being 0-2 and pretty down at this point and coming back and bringing the confidence back in, it was feeling really good. I guess our mentality coming into the playoffs between the playoffs and the group stage to do our own thing, make sure that we are well prepared and individually on point and keep on rising.“
So at no point you were questioning your gameplan coming into this major?
AZR: „No whatsoever no. It is really coming to us, when we getting into these games make sure executing what we practiced. I still stand by that, in the first two games when we were 0-2, when we lost to NRG and AVANGAR, we weren’t playing our game, we were playing scared and since then we just not playing scared pretty much. It has really been showing and we’re coming out pretty strong.“
You set a new record for an Australian team reaching the semifinals. Before this you were the first Australian team being back to back in the legend stage. Are you realizing your achievement yet or are still in the process of seeing how far you can get?
AZR: „It’s obviously a huge achievement and we are all very proud of it but we wanna keep going. We want the trophy. We gonna take it game by game but in the end of the day we wanna win this tournament. No screwing around, we just coming in and gonna play hard and keep doing what we are doing.“
